The Mayors of 312 cities in the country at high risk of polio return were officiated on Friday the 6th by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF). The agency is asking municipalities to take the necessary measures to ensure the increase of vaccination against the disease.
"The strategy should be adopted in the very short term," said Deborah Drupat, Federal Attorney for Citizens' Rights. According to her, failure to comply with the recommendations can result in administrative irregularities and a lack of respect for the status of the Child and Adolescent.
According to state revealed, at least 312 cities have less than 50% of children protected against polio. The recommendation of the World Health Organization is to vaccinate at least 95% to avoid other cases. According to estimates by the Ministry of Health, at least 800,000 children do not benefit from the comprehensive polio immunization program. The last case of polio recorded in Brazil dates back to 1990.
