Earthquake reveals a hidden temple in a pyramid built hundreds of years ago in Mexico | Science and Health

The temple was presented to the press on Thursday (12) in Cuernavaca, the state capital that houses the great pyramid of Teopanzolco. It is a building that belongs to the Tlahuica culture, developed in an area related to the Aztecs and Mexicas.

Due to the earthquake, "the pyramid has undergone a considerable rearrangement of the core of its structure," said Barbara Koniecza, archaeologist at the National Institute of Anthropology and History ( INAH).

The greatest damage to the pyramid was in the upper part, where there were already two temples, one dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, the greatest deity of the Mexicas, and another to Tláloc.

When INAH did studies with a ground penetrating radar to review the pyramidal structure, we discovered traces of a hidden structure that are also dedicated to the god of rain.

It is estimated that this structure dates from the year 1150, while the chronological history of the pyramid of Teopanzolco, about 16 meters high, dates back 240 years.

According to INAH experts, the discovered temple would have an approximate size of six meters long by four wide, with the access staircase to the west side, where the temple is located. staircase is currently visible and is part of the pyramid.

Also found ceramic remains and a censer from the Tlahuica culture.
