At least 10 people were killed Tuesday in Basilan, Philippines, as a result of an attack on the Islamist group Abu Sayyaf, according to the latest badessment of local authorities quoted by the Associated Press. The explosion of an explosive device in a car resulted in the death of a soldier, five members of the local militia and four civilians in the province of Basilan, a small island located in the south Philippines, according to the authorities.
The group of Abu Sayyaf, who swore allegiance to the Islamic State (IS), said the local media had hired him. The bombing, located in a car, occurred at a military checkpoint in Lamitan, capital of Basilan.
The attack took place less than a week after the signing by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte of a Muslim minority in the south of the country, with the aim of isolating the Islamist rebels who operate there. The establishment of a federal state in the country is considered a starting point for the completion of the peace agreement signed with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (FMLI) in 2014.
