RIO – Isabella Ballalai, president of the Brazilian Society of Immunization (SBIM), wakes up and sleeps with a question in her head: how to convince adults to get vaccinated? After childhood, people rarely return to health posts. But today, it is the adult population that worries: many who are between 18 and 50 years old have not had diseases like measles or mumps, nor taken all the doses needed to protect them. Thus, unlike children, who are mostly vaccinated, and the elderly, who are immune to these diseases, the adult population represents a dangerous "window".
– This makes it a gateway to epidemics – says Isabella. – In the case of measles, for example, it is estimated that among adults, the coverage is only 5%. Brazil reports 822 measles cases this year alone
The coverage of almost all mandatory vaccines is below target
It is important to treat The measles vaccine has been included in the national immunization schedule in the United States. 1980s, but until 1992, a single dose was administered. Therefore, it is likely that only those born after this year received the second dose – which guarantees 97% effectiveness. As in this case, immunization against other diseases has also undergone changes, both in terms of the number of doses and the age of application. In addition, many vaccines did not even exist for a few years.
– It happened that the individual carries out the complete vaccination schedule when he was a child. But that was 30 or 40 years ago. The concern about this is so great that SBIM created, for three months, a multidisciplinary group to discuss vaccination in adults, with professionals of various specialties
– Pediatricians are now the only ones to talk about vaccines. You have to talk about pneumology, cardiology, geriatrics – explains Isabella. – What makes a person vaccinated is the medical recommendation. If the doctor does not inform his adult patient, he will not spontaneously seek a position or clinic.
A study conducted by the Ipsos MORI Institute, commissioned by the pharmaceutical company GSK, shows that in Brazil, 64% of adults are not vaccinated
Barbara Furtado, who is the medical manager of vaccines for GSK, recalls that many of these diseases can be serious for adults and especially for pregnant women
– The zika virus has terribly affected babies
Viral triplication (measles, mumps and rubella) Two doses, with an interval of one month. From the age of 50, experts say that it is no longer necessary to take this vaccine because the vast majority of people in this age group have had the disease in childhood.
