The municipality of Ponta Grossa is expected to arrive at the end of this year with a significant reduction in the number of new AIDS cases reported. Indeed, the partial data, verified until the last week, reveal that the disease was diagnosed in 22 patients.
Although the year is not yet over, it is unlikely that the new cases will reach the 66 cases recorded in 2017. This is the smallest number since we started counting in the year. in 1994. That year, 19 new AIDS cases were recorded. Although there was also a decline at the national level, the average reduction in the country was much lower than in Ponta Grossa.
In the notification of new cases of HIV infection (when the virus is detected but the disease has not manifested), whose official count has been detected in the last four years , started in 2002 in the municipality, the reduction was not noticeable in the same way. To date, there have been 58 new cases, which means a higher number than the previous four years and the possibility of exceeding the 2013 registration, when 63 cases were registered in the municipality.
For the Service Coordinator (SAE) and the CTA, Jean Zuber, the reduction may be due to the intensification of campaigns in recent years. "We will have to wait for the coming years to know if this reduction is continuing or if the figures are increasing again, we will then know the meaning of this statistic," he said.
Treatment
For the pharmacist in charge of the specialized pharmacy unit, Marcelo Wisniewski, one of the explanations could be related to new drugs provided to patients with the virus. Since September 2017, the number of tablets for the treatment of new serum positive has been reduced to two per day. This facilitated treatment, started to generate fewer side effects and reduced errors in drug delivery. "In general, only two boxes of drugs are provided for new cases, and the number of remedies changes in specific cases, such as infected pregnant women or older patients," he explains.
Children
Appropriate treatment and medications allow infants born to infected mothers to be totally free of the virus and, therefore, of the disease. Thanks to the progress made in this area, the municipality has not recorded any cases of infected children in 2018.
