Baby with visceral leishmaniasis in a 10-month-old baby in Araçatuba | São José do Rio Preto and Araçatuba

She was hospitalized Monday (26) and was collected to do tests that confirmed Friday the disease.

According to the town hall, she lives in the neighborhood. Health and friendship teams shake the scene at the site and collect blood samples from dogs that may be suffering from the disease. The tests on dogs have not been published yet.

Last week, a woman died of leishmaniasis in the city. She lived in the neighborhood of Jardim do Trevo, and the same blocking procedure was also carried out on the spot.

In 2018, 13 cases of the disease were recorded in Araçatuba and three people died. Last year, nine cases and two deaths were recorded.

Visceral leishmaniasis is an infectious disease that causes persistent fever, enlarged liver and spleen, weight loss and anemia. It is transmitted by the straw mosquito.

The mosquistos are small and have yellowish or straw-colored characteristics. At rest, their wings remain straight and half open.

Transmission occurs when infected females bite a dog or other infected animal, then bite the man, transmitting the protozoan.
