Microsoft announced Thursday (6) on its official blog that Microsoft Edge would undergo major changes and adopt the core technology of Chrome. The browser will be reworked to allow installation on older versions of Windows, such as 7 and 8, while being compatible with macOS, Apple's unique operating system.
To implement the changes, Microsoft must adopt Chromium, the open source project used by other browsers, such as Google Chrome and Opera. With the new Microsoft Edge, the company expects to reach a greater number of users, making the browser compatible with most of the pages available on the Internet. Faster Updates
Changes should be positive for Microsoft Edge users. Currently, the browser is directly integrated with Windows 10 and its update depends on the update of the system as a whole. In the future, Microsoft Edge may be faced with more frequent, platform-independent updates.
The new design of Microsoft Edge will also allow its download on Apple computers, making it a Microsoft strategy to reach developers who create pages based solely on the macOS system. With this, the browser can become as competitive as Google Chrome, which is the most used browser in the world.
It should be remembered that Microsoft Edge can be used on tablets or iPhone equipped with iOS, Apple's operating system developed for mobile devices. As a result, the redesign of the browser will be exclusively focused on computers. As soon as the new edition of the Edge is ready, users of versions 7 and 8 of Windows will already be able to download it on the computer.
The Edge name will be kept.
Microsoft made sure Microsoft Edge kept the same name and redefined browser enhancements, not replacement with new software. While adding Chromium Open Source, the browser features and its interface will continue to be developed by Microsoft, in keeping with the company's tradition of creating unique products.
The release date of the latest version of Microsoft Edge does not have an official date yet. First, the browser must be tested by participants in the Windows Insider program. Once the final version is ready, it will be made available to all users, which can happen in 2019.
