ABADIÂNIA (GO) – A little over 15,000 inhabitants of Abadiânia, a small municipality of Goiás, located 113 km from Brasilia, woke up yesterday with reports of badual badaults against the most famous resident of the locality, the medium João Teixeira de Farias, known worldwide as João de Deus.
As revealed by GLOBO and TV Globo's "Talk with Bial" broadcasts on Friday night, women have been accusing this medium of badual violence.
On Saturday afternoon, the report went to Abadiânia to follow the repercussions of the case in a place where a significant part of its economy is structured in religious tourism attracted by the media. Feelings of mistrust and solidarity have mingled with the city's residents and visitors.
On the premises of the house of Dom Inácio de Loyola, a spiritual center where John of God serves worshipers from all over the world, the order given to the officials was: "Silence". Guards, cafeteria staff and even receptionists and vendors of local religious items are not allowed to comment on the case.
However, the faithful began to defend the medium. The thirty-four-year-old journalist Chandra Pimentel said that she had been personally treated many times by João de Deus and that she had no complaints against the religious leader.
– From what I see, what I feel and so many people living here with him, I think it's a suspicious whistleblower. I've been alone with him many times. He always treats me very well, with a lot of affection, with a lot of respect.
Already in a religious goods store, Irene Martins, a 43-year-old miner, said she arrived in Abadiânia yesterday with the hope of being badisted by the medium next Wednesday:
– Now that I've seen everything on TV, I'm afraid to stay. Talk only in the city. My husband wants me to go home, but I have not made a decision yet. I had to raise money to come here and my faith is very great. I may come back because I am very suspicious.
João de Deus frequents thousands of people three times a week in Abadiânia. Yesterday, as usual, it did not work. Always faithful, all the foreigners prayed at Dom Inácio's house.
