NEW YORK – The Arab League has advised its elected President Jair Bolsonaro to reconsider his plan to transfer the Brazilian Embbady to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. A letter from the secretary general of the League, Ahmad Abu Al Ghait, to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the "concern" of the organization with a possible change.
"By taking such a step, we would not only reach Palestinian interests, but also radically reduce the possibilities of establishing a wider peace," says Abu Al Ghait's letter.
A representative of the Arab League in Brasilia independently confirmed the copy of the correspondence. He asked not to be identified because he was not allowed to speak on the subject. The current Brazilian Government and the future Minister of Foreign Affairs have not responded to requests for comment on this issue.
The letter of the Arab League is one of the most serious warnings directed at Bolsonaro's foreign policy so far. This is an answer to repeated remarks by the president-elect, who has announced his intention to follow in Washington's footsteps and move the Brazilian embbady to Jerusalem.
During the campaign, Bolsonaro pledged to strengthen his ties with Israel, opposing years of conventional foreign policy in the country. Shortly after the victory, the president-elect confirmed to an Israeli newspaper his intention to move the embbady. Since then, however, it seems to have been slightly removed.
The Arab League represents an important market for Brazilian exporters. Brazil recorded a $ 7.1 billion surplus in negotiations with the 22 bloc countries, compared to a $ 419 million deficit with Israel.
In his letter, Abu Al Ghait emphasized the strong nature of Arab-Brazilian relations and their growth potential. The Secretary-General urged Bolsonaro to "consider the Arab perspective as a way to preserve our lasting friendship".
