The Ministry of Health published the survey on infestation rates of Aedes aegypti or LIRAa 2018. The data indicate that 23 cities are at risk of epidemics Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. Among them are Santa Rita, Arari, Humberto de Campos and Cururupu. 94 other municipalities are in a state of alert, including the city of São Luís.

In the northeastern region, the main type of breeding site was the storage of barrels of water, barrels and vats. In Maranhão, 1,177 breeding sites were found in water tanks, 317 in domestic tanks and 14 in garbage.

The LIRAa is formed from data collected by the municipalities themselves, which transmit the results to the Member State. In other words, the cities do not need to be informed about their situation by the Member States, since it is the town halls themselves who were responsible for carrying out the badyzes.

It is then up to the 117 municipalities of Maranhão – both vigilant and at the risk of an epidemic – to define measures to control the situation and protect the citizen. It is the responsibility of the Brasilia portfolio to offer Brazil's municipalities and their secretaries resources for the Vigilance and Health actions. Federal investment has increased from R $ 924.1 million in 2010 to 1.9 billion R $ in 2018.

Zika and chikungunya fell by half

Both countries experienced a significant fall between 2017 and 2018 nationwide. The occurrence rates dropped by 53% and 54%, respectively. In addition, dengue fever increased slightly by 3.9%.
