RIO – Since opening its doors in 2013 in Paris, School 42 has bet on a different teaching model: without teachers, without fixed schedules or diplomas. Created by French billionaire Xavier Niel, the school of innovation has received the support of leading figures in the technology sector, such as Evan Spiegel, creator of Snapchat; Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter; and Brian Chesky, co-founder of Airbnb. In 2016, a branch was opened in Silicon Valley and today, École 42 has franchises in Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Belgium, Lyon (France), Morocco, South Africa and the Netherlands. Next year, schools will open in Indonesia, Colombia, Finland, Spain and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Following the molds of the French Matrix, the School 42 carioca will be free and is expected to open in July of next year. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 30 will be able to compete in one of the 450 seats on offer. The selection process begins with an online, open test, and selected individuals are invited to participate in the "pool", a training camp of one month duration to define who enters or not at school. In Paris, about 30,000 people participate in the first phase, 3,000 are selected for the bootcamp, which selects 900 new students. In Rio, 1.3 000 people should be selected for the pool.
– This "pool" is a total immersion in programming, with 450h of coding – explained Olivier Crouzet, pedagogical director of the School 42, highlighting the reason why children under 18 years old Were not accepted. – We do not want the young people to leave the traditional system to enter the 42nd position, as they say in France, "finish your baccalaureate" first (baccalaureate, exam of end of high school, like Enem).
Selected individuals will encounter an education model completely different from the traditional system. There are no clbades or fixed hours. The program is flexible and is inspired by video games: completed projects provide experience points that must be achieved until the student reaches level 21. On average, the training lasts three years, but some finish earlier and later. There is no need for students to go to school, but there are group projects and meetings can be important.
Educational material will be adapted in Brazil and the entire educational team, consisting of only 14 professionals, will be trained by French school staff.
The Rio franchise will be managed by the Startups Factory and the Development and Management Institute (IDG) – the maintainer of the Amanhã Museum – with the resources of a pool of private companies. According to Héctor Gusmão, executive director of the Startups Brazil Factory, École 42 will aim to train new entrepreneurs and qualify the workforce in the technology sector, including accelerated start-ups at the plant.
– We talk a lot about the development of the ecosystem of entrepreneurship and the training of the workforce is essential in this regard, "said Gusmão .- In the factory, we will have start-up companies that will need employees and School 42 will be able to respond to this demand.
Quotas for Residents of the Region
With experience of having participated in the creation of Porto Digital in Recife, Ricardo Piquet, President of IDG, has highlighted the importance of the project for the community around Porto. The percentage has not yet been defined, but there will be a minimum quota of vacancies for young residents of the region.
– We will give priority to talents who are already our neighbors. We can not bring novelty without considering the community that is already present, "said Piquet – In principle, we will establish a percentage of vacancies so that young people in the region can benefit from this investment.
