Cherif Chekatt's father, the main suspect in the shooting in Strasbourg, said on Saturday that his son had sympathy for the ideas of the Islamic State-based terrorist group. "He told me, for example, that the IE was fighting for the right thing," said Abdelkrim Chekatt on France 2 television.

Sharif Chekatt was born on 24 February February 1989 in Strasbourg. He was well acquainted with the police and justice services for committing common law crimes, mainly robbery and acts of violence. His criminal record includes 27 convictions for common law crimes committed almost all in France, but also in Germany and Switzerland.

Parents and brothers released from prison

Cherif Chekatt's father, mother and two brothers left prison on Saturday. They have been detained since Wednesday for investigation. Nevertheless, the judge released them because of the lack of incriminating evidence.

Like Cherif, the French government clbadified the fencer's father and brother as "ficha S", according to the local press. This means that he is being watched by the French authorities – in their case, for Islamic fundamentalism.
