The project of a Santa Catarina student is the finalist of the Garatéa-ISS competition and will be tested in the space. The second-year students of the Santa Catarina Federal Institute High School (Xanxerê Campus) have created a project to test the water filtration by capillarity, without gravity, and will therefore be experienced in the proposal presented aboard the International Space Station (ISS). 19659002] The project takes the name of Capillarity Vs. Gravity in the filtration process and will be sent on a SpaceX rocket with astronauts from the US Space Agency (NASA) to the ISS Space Station in 2019.
Capillarity is a feature of water molecules that allow, for example, to stay in a straw, to stay above the edges of a glbad without leaking and even to ride a towel.
The idea was inspired by the clay filter that uses gravity to pbad water. the candle with activated charcoal. The proposal is to do exactly the same thing, but in zero gravity.
For this reason, the team will send to space a test tube, separated in the middle by activated carbon. By capillarity, the liquid (methylene blue) should pbad from one side to the other of the tube and be filtered.

Garatéa-ISS is an initiative developed by the Garatéa mission in partnership with the University of São Paulo and the Foundation for support of physics and chemistry. In 2018, 4,200 students from 175 schools across Brazil participated in the project, sponsored by Airvantis, Braskem and TIM Institute.
