German police increased security at the country's main airports Thursday (12/20) after security cameras spotted suspected extremists taking pictures at Stuttgart airport.
According to the German press, the police are looking for four people. Two of them, father and son, were also seen last week taking pictures in a terminal at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, two days after the extremist attack at Strasbourg.
According to the newspaper Bild, both are residents of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and came to Paris with a car fitted with German license plates.
According to SWR, the two people were again filmed by security cameras, this time at Stuttgart Airport, again taking pictures on Wednesday. They left before the police approached them. According to RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland, at least one of the men is considered an Islamic extremist by the German authorities.
The police did not provide any information on the other two wanted persons.
According to ARD, the Moroccan intelligence services reportedly alerted the French and German authorities about the suspects. Moroccans gave suspects a copy of the online discussions, including references to jihad (holy war). According to the ARD, two of the men cited by Moroccans have the same characteristics as those observed around the airports of Paris and Stuttgart.
"We tried to spy at Stuttgart airport and significantly strengthened our security measures at the airport in cooperation with the state police," said police German Federal Republic.
After raising the level of alert, dozens of police were seen patrolling at Stuttgart Airport. According to the Bild newspaper, security has also been enhanced at airports in Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg, as well as at small airports in the south-west of Stuttgart, such as Friedrichshafen, Karlsruhe and Mannheim.
