SUS will supply ointments for the treatment of HPV from 2019

Starting next year, the Sistema nico de Saúde (SUS) will offer podophyllotoxin ointments and imiquimod for the treatment of bad warts and anus, a consequence of infection with HPV. According to the Ministry of Health, the drugs will be available within 180 days.

The human papillomavirus, badually transmitted, can even cause cancer of the cervix uteri – the fourth leading cause of cancer death in women in Brasill. Generally, the type of HPV that causes the appearance of warts is not carcinogenic. These condyloma acuminata have no pattern of appearance in the body with respect to quantity, size and types.

In Brazil, according to a study conducted by the POP-Brazil-epidemiological study on the national prevalence of HPV infection, the estimated prevalence of HPV was 54.6%, 38.4% of these participants had HPV at high risk for cancer development. The survey was conducted in 26 Brazilian capitals and in the federal district with 7,586 respondents, 2,669 of whom were badyzed for HPV typing. The study was conducted among young people aged 16 to 25, including 5,812 women and 1,774 men.

The HPV preventive vaccine has been available free of charge in the SUS since 2014. The target audience for the three doses is girls aged 9 and over. 14 years old, boys aged 11 to 14; people with AIDS, as well as transplanted people aged 9 to 26 years.
