The Japanese court yesterday extended the imprisonment of Brazilian President Carlos Ghosn and the Renault-Nissan Alliance on Sunday (23), for ten days until January 1st.

The provisional arrest of Ghosn, aged 64, had already been extended by 48 hours last Friday (21). The decision was taken after the Tokyo prosecutor's office announced the third complaint against the Brazilian executive.

Carlos Ghosn was arrested on November 19 for charges of concealing payments from millionaires and tax offenses. In the first official complaint, he was accused of having lost about half of his income over a five-year period (2010-2015). In a second phase of the indictment, he was accused of committing the same crime over the past three years.

The third allegation, which adds to the two previous ones with different prison sentences, is based on a breach of trust that could have harmed Nissan Motor. It is suspected that this has pushed Nissan to a loss of $ 16.6 million in private investment, according to Reuters information.

The extension of the detention was justified by the need to obtain more information about these new suspects against the former CEO. According to TV Asahi, prosecutors searched Ghosn's home in Tokyo.

According to the Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the former boss of Nissan had promised to restore his name to the courts. "Things like that are absolutely unacceptable," Ghosn told his lawyer. "I want my position to be heard and my honor restored in court."

The report published by NHK is Ghosn's first known comment since his arrest.

Complaint against the executive

The arrest of Ghosn is the result of an internal investigation by Nissan. When the disclosures were published, Mr. Ghosn was chairman of the board of directors of the badembly and presided over the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

On December 10, prosecutors accused him of failing to pay nearly 5 billion yen ($ 44 million) in his tax returns to the authorities. The amounts would have been hidden in accounts opened from 2010 to 2015. Greg Kelly, his direct badistant, was also indicted.

Subsequently, the detention of the two leaders was prolonged for suspicion of concealment of income in three years, which represents an additional 4 billion yen ($ 35 million).

After the scandal, the executive is removed from the presidency of Mitsubishi Motors, but Renault decides to keep him at his post, which generates a crisis in the alliance between automakers. Monday (17), Nissan did not appoint a replacement to the executive. Ghosn was president of Nissan between 2001 and 2017.

The Renault-Nissan alliance was born in 1999. In 2016, with the entry of Mitsubishi Motors, she became the largest automobile group in the world .
