The Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJMG) declared Monday (24) that Nelson Hungria Penitentiary of Contagem, in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, was banned. According to Judge Wagner Cavalieri, of the city's 1st Municipal Treasury Court, the place will not be able to receive more prisoners until the capacity of the complex is regularized.
According to the judge, the penitentiary can only accommodate 1,640 inmates. Today, there are about two thousand prisoners. According to justice, more than 30 people have fled the scene this year alone.
"The authorities responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Nelson Hungria penitentiary complex have never found any inertia: the burden of responsibility has been transferred to the current management and the officers who work there. It is also the prisoners and family members who have worsened, "said the judge in his decision.
In the early hours of Monday, a prisoner was injured while he was trying to escape the penitentiary. According to the State Secretary for Prison Administration (Seap), a group was spotted by the on-duty team who was trying to escape through the roof of Annex 1
One of the prisoners, who was wearing a clothesline to escape, fell and had to be taken to the city's municipal hospital.
The court also ordered 600 prison officers to work in Nelson, Hungary. Today, there are 540 servers responsible for the penitentiary.
The government of Minas Gerais must be notified Wednesday. The State Department of Prison Administration (Seap) has been sought for the report, but has not yet taken a stand on the issue.
Nelson Hungary was partially banned in April. According to the judge, the determination made no difference.
