A Datafolha study released on Monday (31) noted that 61% of Brazilians believe that gun ownership should be banned as it poses a threat to the lives of others.

The right of possession means being able to keep a weapon at home. To walk with the gun, you must have the right to wear.

The survey was conducted on the 18th and 19th of this month. In the previous survey, in October, 55% said they were opposed to firearms ownership.

Datafolha heard 2,077 people in 130 counties across the country.

From October to December, the share of people in favor of gun ownership increased from 41% to 37%, with a margin of error slightly greater than or equal to two percentage points .

On Saturday (29), President-elect Jair Bolsonaro announced on Twitter that he intended to issue a decree facilitating the possession of weapons. Since the election campaign, he had been in favor of greater flexibility in the Disarmament Statute. By law, a person who wants to have a firearm at home must meet a number of conditions (see below).

Discounts by Population

According to the Datafolha, rejection of gun ownership is more important in women. 71% of them said they were opposed, while 51% of men were of the same opinion.

Tenure support increases with the number of years of the person's studies. 41% of Datafolha respondents with higher education are in favor of tenure. The index is 34% among those who have only a basic level of education.

Support also increases as incomes rise. Among those whose monthly family income is less than or equal to 2, the minimum income is 32%, which advocates the possession of weapons. Among those earning more than 10 minimum wages, this percentage reaches 54%.

Among the regions of the country, 32% of the inhabitants are in favor of the possession of weapons. The South is the country where most people are in favor, with 47%.

Currently, authorizations for possession are granted by the federal police. The conditions are as follows:

  • To be at least 25 years of age
  • To have a legal occupation
  • To justify the "actual need" to possess a weapon
  • Not to respond to a police investigation or criminal prosecution
  • (including judges), military and election
  • Demonstrate a psychological and technical ability to use firearms

In addition, the Disarmament Statute provides that the evidence of criminal record, investigations and proceedings, lawful activity and technical and psychological capacity must be periodically "at least five years".
