Toyota is preparing a sporty version of the Corolla Sport, hatchback version of the global mid-size sedan. The proposal is a hot hatch developed by the Gazoo Racing division and aims to support competitors such as VW Golf GTI, Hyundai i30N, Ford Focus RS, Peugeot 308 GTi and Renault Megane RS, for example.
Behind the project, engineer Tetsuya Tada leads the team, being in charge of the Supra and GT 86. The Australian subsidiary of Toyota has lobbied for the Corolla GR to take shape quickly, but the manufacturer does not guarantee that this sport will be the next Gazoo.
According to reports, Toyota has already applied for several subsidiaries for an average performance car. If the markets in which it operates demand such an option, the parent company in Japan will hardly refuse. Officially, the company claims to study the positioning of a product in this market of high performance hatches.
Visually, Gazoo Racing will have no difficulty in customizing the Corolla GR, which will obviously result in modifications of the suspension (firmer), brakes and structural reinforcement of the TNGA platform. Another point is the addition of specific traction and stability commands as well as the torque vector for better bending.
However, in mechanics, the future Toyota Corolla GR has still not been identified, but it is between 250 and 300 horses. The engine for this already exists, the 2.0 Turbo being used by Lexus which, after the preparation, can really make the hatch very nervous. In addition, there is a six-speed manual gearbox and an automatic option.
As it should only be sold as a hatch, we will hardly see it in Brazil, where the Corolla Prestige sedan should be unique in production, although The Toyota Corolla GR will come to claim VW Golf GTI and Hyundai i30N
