US President Donald Trump presented on Wednesday a rather harsh picture of the war-torn situation in Syria, summing up the country with two words: "sand and death", without giving details on the withdrawal of US troops .
"Syria was lost a long time ago, and besides, I do not want – we are talking about sand and death, that's what we're talking about," Trump said at from a cabinet meeting.
"We are not talking about vast riches, we are talking about sand and death."
Regarding the controversial departure of US troops from Syria, Trump said, "I do not want to stay in Syria forever."
After announcing recently that the troops would return immediately to the United States and that the Islamic State (IS) group had been defeated, it gave no clear predictions as to the exit of the troops.
"I never said we would leave overnight," said Trump. "Oh, we are withdrawing," he added, simply saying that it would happen "within a time frame".
On Monday, the Republican president said the United States was "slowly sending" troops to their country, a tone significantly different from the one used in the recall announcement of December 19.
The United States has installed about 2,000 soldiers in northern Syria, mostly special forces, to fight against employment insurance and support other anti-extremist forces.
