BRASÍLIA – President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday that he was in agreement to discuss "in the future" the installation of a US military base in Brazil and is worried about relations between Venezuela and Russia.

"The physical problem may even be symbolic, because nowadays the power of the American, Chinese and Russian armed forces extends to the whole world, whatever its basis."
Bolsonaro met Wednesday with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, with whom he pledged to strengthen cooperation in the areas of trade, security and the fight against "authoritarian regimes" . in Cuba and Venezuela.
The President of the Republic declared himself "concerned" by the military maneuvers carried out in early December between Venezuela and Russia on Venezuelan soil, to which Russian bombers were sent.
"As expected, Russia has maneuvered to Venezuela, we know the intentions of the Maduro government, the dictatorship of Maduro and Brazil has to worry about it," Bolsonaro said. "We do not want a superpower here in South America, but we should have supremacy in my opinion," he added.
Regarding relations with the US government, he said: "My approach to the US is economic, but it can also be warlike, we can discuss it in the future."
The president also said that during the last "twenty or twenty-five years" the Brazilian armed forces have been "abandoned for political reasons" because "they are the last obstacle to socialism".
Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro recently accused the United States of coordinating a plot to create armed incidents on Venezuela's borders with Brazil and Colombia to justify military intervention.
In the same interview with SBT, Bolsonaro confirmed his presence at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "I intend to go to Switzerland, to Davos, to participate in this meeting.This will be my debut out of Brazil," he said.
Bolsonaro will attend the meeting that will bring together the world's economic and political elite from January 21 to 25, accompanied by his all-powerful Finance Minister, Paulo Guedes.
