A man is currently being held in isolation at the University Hospital of Uppsala, Sweden, with an alleged Ebola infection after his visit to Burundi, regional authorities said Friday (4). The hospital said the man had spent three weeks in Burundi and had the clbadic symptoms of haemorrhagic fever, such as vomiting blood. The test results are expected for this Friday.
The symptoms of a highly contagious and deadly disease can take up to three weeks before they manifest themselves.
There is no known Ebola outbreak in Burundi, but the African country is bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been fighting an epidemic for about six months.
The disease killed 356 of the 585 known cases of infection. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), it is the second most serious epidemic of the disease.
The last outbreak occurred between 2013 and 2016 in West Africa, where more than 28,000 cases were confirmed.
The emergency clinic located in the Swedish city of Enkoping, where the patient had asked for help, was closed and staff members in contact with him were monitored.
