The UK Parliament approved Tuesday (9) an amendment that obligates the government of Prime Minister Theresa May to submit, within three days, a "Plan B" for Brexit in case the agreement with the European Union vote next Tuesday (15). Before, this period was 21 days.
The amendment was approved by 308 votes in favor and 297 votes against.
Brexit is what is known as the UK's exit process from the European Union (EU). On Tuesday, the UK Parliament will vote on the deal that Theresa May has negotiated with representatives from European countries. But most members oppose the text, which faces resistance even within the party's prime minister, the Conservative. We do not know what can happen if the document is rejected.
- Among the most controversial points, there is the question of the border between Northern Ireland (which is part of the United Kingdom) and the Republic of Ireland (which is independent and European Union ).
Although neither the EU nor the British government wants to close the border, the absence of consensus would lead the region to a dead end because the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom would have rules different in terms of customs and immigration.
If the agreement on Brexit is not pbaded by Parliament next week, the UK will theoretically leave the European Union without agreement. The law provides that this will happen at 29 hours on March 29 (London time).
Eventually, if the 28 members of the European Union agree, this date can be extended. Another possibility is that May tries to approve the agreement again in Parliament. A less likely hypothesis would be a new referendum on Brexit. There, there would be a possibility that the UK's exit from the EU will not even happen.
