NASA recently announced that the TESS satellite had discovered a new exoplanet three times larger than the Earth outside the solar system.
Located about 53 light-years away from our solar system, the planet has been described as a "strange rock ball" and "gas" by Mbadachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) specialists who have been involved in the development of the space telescope.
Named HD 21749b, the exoplanet has a 36-day orbit in rotation around a star. The temperature of the celestial body is about 148 ° C. "It's the coldest planet we know of from such a bright star," said Diana Dragomir, a researcher at MIT.
The mission of the Transiting Exoplanet Satellite Survey satellite, which began in April 2018, is to find new planets. The telescope travels the space using the Kepler probe data, launched in 2009 and completely disconnected from the Earth last year.
In addition to the HD 21749b, the TESS has discovered two other exoplanets since last July.
