A Datafolha survey published Thursday by the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo (10) indicates that 41% of Brazilians are against any type of abortion and that this practice should be totally prohibited.
Currently, abortion is only allowed in three cases in Brazil:
- when pregnancy results from rape,
- when there is a danger of death for the woman;
- if the fetus is anencephalic
] In the first two situations, abortion is allowed by law. In the case of an anencephalic fetus, it resulted from an agreement signed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF). In any other situation, abortion is considered a crime in Brazil.
The survey was conducted by Datafolha from December 18 to 19, and heard from 2,077 people aged 16 and over in 130 cities across the country. The margin of error is two percentage points, plus or minus. The confidence level is 95%.
Datafolha also asked if respondents agreed that pregnant women should be financially supported to have their child and 51% said no. 46% accepted.
