The statues of Easter Island, called Moai, have always raised doubts as to the reason for their sculpture and the choice of their location. Scientists have published a new theory to explain the existence and position of these monoliths in the scientific journal Plos One last Thursday
According to the study, large stone sculptures in the form of heads were created by the Rapanui people, who lived on the island in the 13th century to indicate the sources of drinking water on the island.
The location of 93 statues scattered throughout the region is examined and a relationship is established with aquifers, groundwater reservoirs and places where water flowed
"Each Once we saw large amounts of fresh water, we saw giant statues, "says Carl Lipo, co-author of the research and professor at Binghamton University in New York, at The Guardian. "It was ridiculously predictable."
The theory would explain why statues are found in coastal and inland areas. The authors of the study suggest that the size of the moai can even indicate the quantity and quality of water.
"This shows that the location of the statues is not a strange ritual", but they have been "integrated into the life of the community". Lipo.
