In September 2017, US authorities accused the Cuban government of launching an "acoustic attack" against its embbady. As a result of this unprecedented attack, 16 diplomats were hospitalized, suffering from hearing problems, dizziness and nausea. The Americans then decided to repatriate more than half of their employees while threatening Cuba with reprisals of all kinds. The big question then, troubling the army around the world, was: "What new weapon did the Cubans invent?"
Last Friday, American scientists published the results of precise badyzes of audio recordings made available by diplomats. The recorded sound is that of male crickets (the
Anurogryllus celerinictus
), trying to attract females. Crickets Yes, crickets. That is to say, Havana crickets terrorized for months the most powerful military power on the planet – disorienting, in the process, so much.
The study of American scientists must have been received in Havana with a lot of laughter, but also with an inevitable disappointment. After all, this mysterious weapon gave an unplanned breath for a few months to the deterrent capacity of the weakened Cuban army.
In southern Angola, in Benguela, lies a small insect, the Martrindinde, capable of producing with its wings a much more shrill sound than any cricket (even Cuban) . I imagine the damage that a well-trained brigade of martriindes could do. In fact, only one brave Martrindinde, infiltrating the White House, would be enough to change American history forever. I hope that Angolan military intelligence will read this column and decide to invest in weddings.
Cubans, Angolans, Brazilians and, as a rule, all the peoples of the blessed tropical nations, accustomed to deal with the daily "acoustic attacks" of cicadas, crickets, toads and frogs, have to fear that country music and the locals.
In the United States, however, the long wall novel continues. The US government remains partially paralyzed (at least until the date I write this column). In addition, Donald Trump threatens to declare the state of national emergency, which would allow him to take a number of extraordinary measures, including the mobilization of military funds, while bringing the conflict with the Democrats to a level never before achieved.
Desperate, Trump kicks, hits the tables (literally) and unfolds in lies. The border serves as a gateway for terrorists, he says. Which terrorists? I can not tell. Traffickers use unprotected areas to get rid of the drug that kills hundreds of US citizens every day. Yes, it is true that a good deal of the drugs that enter the United States cross the border with Mexico, but are concealed in vehicles that cross legally. Etc.
Inventing "acoustic weapons" and other non-existent dangers can work for a while, scare people and unite them against the common enemy. However, day after day, someone discovers that the so-called enemy was, after all, a mere cricket. Sometimes it's too late. The story is full of triumphant stuff. I want to believe, however, that Donald Trump will be overthrown by his own lies.
