The Enemy – End of relationship: what is expected of the future of Destiny without Activision?

[ad_1]

Late Friday afternoon, we were taken aback by the announcement that Activision and Bungie terminated prematurely the partnership that gave rise to of Destiny .

All rights and obligations of the company were granted to Bungie as part of the division of the goods.

Initially scheduled for a decade and total control of Destiny, now baduming the role of game publisher – in addition to being, of course, developer. It also carries in its baggage a $ 100 million investment made last June by the Chinese giant NetEase .

In the beginning, the novelty seems good for all parties:

  • Activision stops dealing with a complex franchise, which requires intense community management and accurate, long-term planning to work well;
  • Bungie finally takes 100% creative control of the series, free to touch the project at will and eliminating existing conflicts with Activision since the publication of the first Destiny
  • . Fans get a direct communication channel with who decides and effectively executes all the changes, adjustments and novelties of the game, thus eliminating the figure of the editor. that, from the point of view of the community, the function was not always very clear.

However, the fact is also bearing some air of déjà vu: when Bungie stopped playing games in the series Halo for Microsoft and signed contract with Activision gave the same impression of freedom and total control over the destination itself

Of course, there are clear differences between the two situations. In one, Bungie went on to make games for a big company and began to grow for the other while, in this more recent case, it turns out to be totally independent.

In any case, it is true that the producer of Seattle does not leave this story with Activision with the same brightness and the same optimism as at the end of his adventures with Halo. The confusion with Activision during these years of Destiny, with many corrections and some communication difficulties with the community, tarnishes the credibility and efficiency of Bungie.

Yet, this is testimony to the fact that even with all this, have managed to create a large and committed community, which has even been fragmented between three different platforms – PlayStation 4 Xbox One and PC – defend the title

It's very cool and exciting that Bungie now has full freedom to play Destiny in the way that suits her best, but the badurance that the future will be an absolute success is not total. . At least she has all the necessary tools and a large number of fans willing to give the company the opportunity to shine on its own.
