US President Donald Trump will unveil Thursday his new missile defense strategy, designed to face the threat posed by the new weapons of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.
Trump will travel to the Pentagon to submit a review ordered in 2017 and expected several months ago, US officials said.
The Pentagon document details the new US protection plans against the new hypersonic missiles in China and Russia, which can travel more than 5,000 km / h and maneuver and are virtually impossible to intercept.
The United States wants to monitor the trajectory of these missiles through special sensors, modernizing the tools already in space, notes the document.
The Pentagon will also launch a study on the creation of a new interception system, with a kind of drone equipped with missiles capable of staying in orbit to destroy hypersonic missiles hostile to their apogee.
The new defense strategy also concerns the ballistic missiles of Iran and North Korea, less sophisticated but capable of directly threatening American allies in Europe and Japan, in which the Pentagon is exploring another option: destroyed them right after the launch.
The current defense systems aim at destroying missiles in full flight and if they manage to neutralize them even during the acceleration phase, the United States will strengthen the defense and deterrence of its allies.
In this sense, the Pentagon is seeking to equip a new type of missile f-35 "invisible" fighter aircraft to patrol launching areas, for example during a hypothetical conflict with North Korea.
