The volcano on the small island of Kuchinoerabu in southern Japan erupted on Thursday (17), according to the National Meteorological Agency. There is no trace of injury or damage.

The ashes rose more than 6 km and fell within a radius of 1.5 km, the government announced.

"We have taken all necessary measures to ensure security," said at a press conference the spokesman of the Executive Council, Yoshihide Suga. For the moment, there is no order to withdraw the population.

There have been several eruptions on the island since last year, "but we launched this alert because this morning, at 9:19 am local time (22:19 GMT), was more important," said Jun Fujimatsu, who weather agency.

The volcano is currently at stage 5 of the agency's five-year risk scale, which does not even consider raising the level.

"A loud explosion was heard and the earth shook," said a resident of the island at NHK.

In May 2015, the approximately 130 residents of Kuchinoerabu were evacuated from the island, to the far south of Japan, after a warning indicating the maximum level (five) of eruption.

Japan is located in the "Pacific Fire Belt", where tectonic plates coincide, and there is much of the volcanic eruptions and earthquakes on the planet. It has 127 active volcanoes.
