After being virtually stable in October, the Brazilian economy returned to growth in November, according to figures released Thursday by the Central Bank (BC) (17).

According to the institution, the index of economic activity (IBC-Br) recorded an increase of 0.29% in November of last year compared with October 2017 This figure was calculated with "seasonal adjustment". which is a compensation for comparing different periods of a year.

The IBC-Br, of the Central Bank, is used to anticipate the result of gross domestic product (GDP) calculated by the Institute. Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

According to the BC, this year's party recorded a 1.38% increase in the indicator of the level of activity of the Brazilian economy (without seasonal adjustment).

Already in the accumulation of 12 months up to November 2018, there was an expansion of 1.44% (also without adjustment), according to data from the institution.

Gross Domestic Product is the sum of all goods and services produced in the country and is used to measure the evolution of the economy.

However, the IBC-Br calculation is somewhat different from the one used in GDP. The BC indicator incorporates estimates for agriculture, industry and the service sector, in addition to taxes. The results of IBC-Br do not always show the proximity of official data published by IBGE.

The OC itself has already stated that "we have to be careful in IBC-Br and GDP quarterly comparisons". According to the institution, the conceptual and methodological features of CIB-Br (including the process of seasonal adjustment) may lead to temporary differences between its evolution and GDP, "warning comparisons in the shorter term".
