The University Hospital Center of Brasilia (HUB) begins, this Friday (16), to welcome people belonging to "groups at risk" of HIV infection. At the site, patients can withdraw drugs such as PEP and PrEP ( for details below ). The service is free, with on-site planning.
With this new service, the UnB hospital becomes the second public health unit in the federal district to offer pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Until then, the service was only offered by the day hospital, at 508 South.
On site, medical infectologists, nurses, pharmacists and psychologists will follow up patients. In PrEP mode, the user should take one tablet daily to avoid any infection in case of exposure to the HIV virus.
Unlike a vaccine, the use of the drug does not confer on the person taking the drug the immunity against HIV. The compound prevents the virus from entering the bloodstream, provided that it is taken regularly and without any errors. In Brazil and around the world, PrEP is still in the testing phase. Although this is part of this public, the medical team warns that it is necessary to have an indication of use of the drug. Therefore, when you arrive at the clinic, the user must pbad a rapid HIV test.
"If the result is negative, we will do the consultation to badess the degree of vulnerability and even if there is an indication. If it is positive, we refer to the treatment of the disease, which requires another therapy, "says infectious diseases specialist Valéria Paes.

With the prescription in hand, who must attend you can take the drug the same day at the pharmacy of HUB school.
According to Valeria, PrEP is offered during the period of vulnerability. The idea is that monitoring reduces the degree of exposure and that, if the risk ceases, it is possible to stop the treatment.
Individuals seeking this service will also receive counseling on baduality, situations that increase vulnerability – such as alcohol and drug abuse – and prevention of other badually transmitted infections (STIs).
PrEP has been shown to be effective in preventing the HIV virus, but does not offer any kind of barrier against other badually transmitted diseases – syphilis, hepatitis, candidiasis or HPV, for example. Therefore, the recommendation is to combine the pill with the condom.
Consultations at the HUB will take place on Fridays at 1 pm, in the Orange corridor 1 of the outpatient department. The health office is at SGAN, 605, Av. L2 Norte.
To schedule the service, you must go to the yellow corridor of the hospital in person, from Monday to Thursday, from 8:00 to 11:00. More information can be obtained by calling 2028-5262.
