US President Donald Trump pledged to invest in a space defense system against what he called a "threat from outside opponents". In a statement to the Pentagon in Washington on Thursday, the Republican said the shield will "detect and destroy" missiles fired in North America.
"We will recognize that space is a new battleground where space power is in the lead," Trump said.
The system recalls the strategic defense initiative developed by former President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s – one of Trump's references. This shield planned during the cold war has received the nickname "Star Wars".
A few months ago, Trump announced the creation of an exclusive military force for space, parallel to the army, navy and aviation. Part of the government's defense team is however against it.
Six-Minute Defense Measures

The reason that pushed Trump to invest in missile systems and anti-aircraft batteries – and not only in Space Force – resides in the "expanding storage capacity" of the enemy countries of America.
The American quoted Iran, an enemy country of the United States since the late 1970s. According to him, the military power of the United States must rebound faster than that of his opponents. "We must not just keep pace with other countries, but exceed them," said the president.
"We are good players, but we can be much worse than anyone if we need them." The more [o arsenal militar] will be strong, the less we will need it, "said Trump. [ad_2]
