Rio police on Thursday arrested a woman who had been found guilty of torturing a two-year-old child. Vera Lúcia de Sant & Anna Gomes was a fugitive since 2016.
The retired attorney seemed to be careful not to hide. The police did not seem to care. Vera Lúcia de Sant & Anna Gomes lived at the same address as the current one at the time of the crime: an apartment located in Ipanema, in the southern area of Rio, near the beach.
On Wednesday (16), journalist Bárbara Carvalho of GloboNews was in the building. On Thursday (17), the police executed the arrest warrant. Vera Lúcia de Sant & Anna Gomes did not feel well and had to take medication at the hospital. It was only later that she was taken to the municipal police and from there to the penitentiary.
In 2010, the retired attorney was sentenced to eight years and two months in prison for torture and mistreatment of a two-year-old girl. She had temporary custody of the child, which she had the intention to adopt. At the time, the Trusteeship Council had records that revealed how Vera Lucia treated the girl. In the prison, the prosecutor gave an interview to deny the charges.
The retired prosecutor spent three years and ten months in prison and left in 2014 with a habeas corpus from the Federal Supreme Court. She was found guilty in the second instance and even managed to reduce her sentence. When all the appeal possibilities were exhausted, the Rio de Janeiro court decreed the arrest of Vera Lucia under a semi-open regime. It was in May 2016 and since then she has been considered a fugitive.
Vera Lucia now has another year and seven months of achievement. In semi-open mode, in general, the prisoner spends the day outside but sleeps in prison. The Department of Justice has not yet defined the routine of the retired attorney.
