With Simone in the race, the Senate will have a record of presidential candidates

Within 12 days of the election, the Senate can record a record number of presidential candidates since the new democratization. The election to the presidency of the Senate is scheduled for February 1, the same day that elected October will take office. Senator Simone Tebet is the only woman among the candidates already declared.

Of the pre-declared candidates appointed to the Senate Command, eight are considered for this year's vote:

If intentions turn into candidacies, the 2019 election will be the record number of competitors since the re-democratization.

Since 1985 – date of the end of the military dictatorship – the election to the presidency of the Senate that registered the highest number of candidates was 20 01, played by three parliamentarians: Jader Barbalho (MDB- PA) and former Senators Arlindo Porto (PTB-MG) and Jefferson Peres (PDT-AM).

Owner of the largest Senate seat of the next legislature – with 12 senators – the MDB claims the right to re-order the House. In the beginning, the acronym can have two candidates in the race for the presidency of the Senate.

Since 2007, the MDB chairs the Senate. That year, the party left the presidency of the House of Representatives since 2001, after the resignation of Renan Calheiros after announcing that he had received a loan from a contractor to pay his daughter's pension .

According to the General Secretariat of the Senate, the Constitution and regulations of the House stipulate that, in the election of the office of the presidency, "as far as possible, proportionality". According to the agency, "traditionally, the one who occupies the largest seat also has the presidency, but it depends on the vote."
