An amazing video shows traces of life at the bottom of the Antarctic Underground Lake

Earlier this year, a group of scientists from the international SALSA project ("Scientific Access to Antarctic Subglacial Zones") reached the mysterious Mercer Lake, located under the Antarctic ice sheets and now found signs of ancient life.

Slawek Tulaczyk, a glaciologist at the University of California, California, described the discovery of crustaceans and tardigrades, also known as the aquatic bear, as "quite surprising".

The same micro-paleontologist, David Harwood, a member of the SALSA team, called the discovery "totally unexpected".

Scientists had to pierce the ice to obtain the skeletons and capture rare images of the lake and under a kilometer of ice, the carcbades of these small animals were preserved.

Using crustacean DNA samples, researchers can determine whether it is marine species or freshwater. The result will help reveal other secrets of the history of Antarctic glaciers.
