The first lunar eclipse of 2019 can be observed at the Cabo Branco station – Science, Culture and Arts, in the Altiplano district, in João Pessoa. At dawn this Sunday (20) for Monday (21), the station will be open to the observation of the lunar eclipse, which will take place from 0:30, the total eclipse being scheduled at 1h50 this Monday morning.
The entrance is free for the public of all ages. The phenomenon can be observed with or without the aid of telescopes, binoculars and telescopes and no protective equipment is required. We remember that the success of the event will depend on the weather conditions of the day.
Sunday (20), various activities are planned at home from 18 hours, with musical performance of Michel Soares, in the amphitheater, workshop on the phenomenon of the super moon, telescope observation and projection in real time. from the eclipse, on the wall of the administrative building.
The president of the Association of Astronomy Paraiba (APA), Marcelo Zurita, said that it would act of the last total eclipse of the visible moon of Paraíba during the next three years. The next, according to him, will be held only in May 2022. The eclipse, between the partial and total phase, should last about three hours.
The event at Cabo Branco station will be accompanied by Professor Marcos Jerônimo, professor at the Astronomy Laboratory, which completes this year 50 years of astronomical activity devoted to the teaching of the Astronomy in Paraíba, with the exhibition "The man and the universe", in the lobby of the administrative building of the house.
"Even though it's a little uncomfortable and weather-stressed, it's one of the most interesting astronomical events of 2019 and the most accessible, the easiest to observe, even to the naked eye, so it's worth staying awake until dawn to follow this eclipse, even if you do not have telescopes, telescopes or binoculars, "said Professor Marcos Jerônimo.
Professor Marcos Jerônimo explained that shortly after the maximum of the eclipse, during the phase of totality, the moon would reach the perigee, ie the point of its orbit the closer to the Earth. "When the full moon coincides with its perigee, it's called superlum, more commonly called the blood moon," commented the professor.
The eclipse will be visible from north to south of North and South America, while parts of Eastern Europe, North-West Africa and South-East Asia 'Will only have a partial eclipse just before sunrise. For the rest of the world, the eclipse will not be visible.
Starting at 0:33, the first contact of the Moon with the shadow of the Earth called "Umbra". From then on, observers will be able to see the shadow advance on the lunar surface until it completely covers it at 1:41. The moon must then take on a reddish color caused by the scattering of sunlight reflected by the Earth's atmosphere. The maximum point of the eclipse must occur at 2:12 and at 2:43, the Moon begins to emerge from the shadow of the Earth. From this moment, the shadow returns to the Moon's surface until 3:50 am, closing time of the partial phase of the eclipse.
Scientifically, there is still a penumbra phase that begins at 23:36 on Sunday and ends at 16:48 on Monday. In this phase, the Sun's light reaching the Moon is partially blocked by the Earth. There is a reduction in the brightness of the moon that is imperceptible to the naked eye and therefore of no interest to the public.
