A man died this weekend at the Paraiso do Tocantins Regional Hospital in the central region of the state, while he was suspected of having dengue hemorrhagic. The latter has been described as severe dengue after a change of nomenclature by the World Health Organization (WHO). This is the second death due to the disease notified to Tocantins in 2019.
The man was a driver and lived in Paraíso do Tocantins. The State Department of Health confirmed suspicions on Monday (21) and indicated that the case was under investigation, but did not give more than details about the patient.
According to the state, there is still no data compiled on dengue records in 2019.
However, a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health of Palmas showed that dengue cases increased by 715% only during the first two weeks of the year. On the 14th of this month, 742 notifications had been received, compared to 91 at the same time last year.
The first death attributable to dengue haemorrhagic fever confirmed in 2019 is the boy Filipe Duarte Cerqueira, aged 5, on January 3rd. He was hospitalized in a private hospital in Palmas and finally did not resist.
The boy lived in Miracema do Tocantins, in the central region. He had West syndrome, a rare type of epilepsy. Filipe would be 6 years old on January 12th. He was buried in a cemetery in Dianopolis.
