MP Kim Kataguiri (DEM-SP) declared Wednesday (23) that he has resigned the mayoral elections scheduled for February 1st.
Katiguiri announced his withdrawal at a press conference in the Green Room of the House.
He indicated that he had withdrawn his candidacy to support the elected MP Marcel van Hattem (Novo-RS), who had applied for this position on Tuesday (22).
"I withdraw my candidacy and announce my support for Marcel's candidacy, I think we would have no reason to keep the candidacy separate, thinking the same way, defending the same ideals," Kataguiri said. , citing pension reform as an example. Social.
The fourth MP with the highest number of votes in São Paulo and one of the founders of the Movimento Brasil Livre (MBL), Kataguiri even appealed to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to ensure that his application is not canceled because he was not old enough. to hold a position in the succession line of the Presidency of the Republic.
One of the criteria for a candidate to be elected President of the Republic is to be at least 35 years old. Some interpret that, by extension, this requirement would apply to others in the line of succession, but there is no consensus on this.
Currently, Kataguiri is 22 years old. On the day of the election, he will have already done 23.
The application for recipient of the status of chief economist was, however, rejected by Luiz Fux, Vice-President of the Court, who understood that there was no prior indication. that the House will prevent the motion.
According to the rules of procedure of the House, the only express requirement is that the office of Speaker of the House be occupied by a Brazilian. There is no mention of age.
Elmar Nascimento (BA), leader of the DEM in the House, told G1 that he had urged Kataguiri to give up his candidacy. The party already has the current mayor Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), who will try to be re-elected.
Kataguiri, questioned about why he would not support Maia, who also has a liberal profile, responded that he considered Van Hattem had a more direct channel with the population.
"Rodrigo Maia defends a pension reform, but does not defend, for example, an administrative reform as Marcel defends. […] He has no communication channel as direct with the population as Marcel and I think that it is necessary to approve the pension reform, "he said.
