The incident in Brumadinho occurs three years after the tragedy of Mariana, when a residue dam of Vale's company Samarco was broken. About 43.7 million cubic meters of mud, a volume close to Pão de Açúcar, escaped from the miner's facilities during the biggest environmental disaster in Brazil. The accident occurred on November 5, 2015. Nineteen people have died and the cities in the area are still suffering the effects of toxic waste strewn in the mud.
