Russia, China, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea joined Saturday (June 26th) to oppose US pressure on the UN Security Council. The US government urged the Council to express its full support for the National Assembly of Venezuela, as the only "democratically elected institution" in the country. Russia has accused Washington of supporting an attempted coup d'état, putting Venezuela at the center of a growing geopolitical duel.

The ruling comes before the 15-member meeting of the body, scheduled for Saturday, 26, at the request of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The meeting was convened after the United States and several countries in the region recognized the Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the head of the state and called on President Nicolas Maduro to waive this accusation. .

Also Saturday, representatives from Spain, Germany and France gave Maduro eight days to organize "clean and democratic elections". If the deadline is not respected, the three countries will recognize Guaidó as interim president.
