Agency detects 54 dams with infrastructure problems – Brazil

BRASÍLIA – The National Water Agency (ANA) detected in the last three years a total of 54 Brazilian dams with infrastructure problems . This volume equates to more than half of the total of the 104 dams monitored by the agency.

The information was verified by the state last December, as part of a survey conducted through the agency through the Access to Information Act. information (LAI). Today, according to ANA, there are only six employees of the agency throughout the country to perform this inspection work.

The dams inspected by ANA are clbadified in the "multiple use" category, that is, for energy production, human consumption and navigation. They are different from the waste rock dams, which come under the National Mining Agency (ANM).

The report asked the ANA about the total number of notifications, warnings and fines issued by the agency regarding problems related to the infrastructure of dams – regardless of their dams – in 2016 , 2017 and 2018.

"During the reporting period, 54 dams were reported on a number of identified security-related issues, and some of the issues identified during this period were resolved. still others are being resolved by the respective contractors, "said the agency.

Between 2016 and 2018, ANA imposed 26 fines on 23 dams, for a total amount of R $ 79,000. Eight other notices of offenses with a daily fine were issued against eight dams, for a total of R $ 267,000.

ANA did not report at the time which dams posed a problem.
