Palestine's ambbadador to Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben, said on Monday (28) that Brazil would not confirm the transfer of the Israeli embbady from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Alzeben made this statement after meeting with interim President Hamilton Mourão.
On November 1 of last year, President-elect Jair Bolsonaro had announced that Brazil would transfer the Israeli embbady to Jerusalem. Two weeks later, interviewed by a journalist on the subject, Bolsonaro said: "When I take office in January, you will get the answer."
"Any subject on this subject will be studied by the high authorities of Brazil and we hope that it will not happen," Alzeben said.
The measure, already adopted by the United States, is controversial. Indeed, Israel considers Jerusalem as "the eternal and indivisible capital" of the country. But Palestinians do not accept and claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
By transferring the Israeli embbady from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the country recognizes the city as the capital of Israel.
"It would be damaging for the Israelis, for the Palestinians, for Brazil, for the whole world, for peace, so that this does not happen, we hope that it will not happen," Alzeben said Monday. .
According to the ambbadador, Hamilton Mourão said at Monday's meeting that the transfer of the embbady was being discussed within the Brazilian government.
Brazil has recognized the Palestinian state as a country since December 2010, after sending a letter from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to the President of the Palestinian National Authority , Mahmoud Abbas.
Invitation to Bolsonaro and Mourão
Ambbadador Alzeben said he invited Bolsonaro and Mourão to a trip to Palestine, so that they could "pray together" for peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
- Understanding the conflict between Israel and Palestine
Alzeben said that the delegation was satisfied with the meeting with Mourão, in the hope of maintaining "good relations" between Brazil and Palestine.
"We are delighted that good relations are continuing between Palestine and Brazil, in accordance with international law, in keeping with this Brazilian tradition for 70 years," he said.
The ambbadador also said that he wished a speedy recovery to Bolsonaro and handed a letter of condolence following the break-up of Vale's mining dam in Brumadinho (MG).
