A 2-month-old baby died Sunday afternoon (27) in Xanxerê, in western Santa Catarina, suffering from meningitis, according to the mayor. The central laboratory of the state (Lacen) must confirm the cause of death between Monday (28) and Tuesday (29), still according to the municipal administration.
The child was hospitalized at the São Paulo Regional Hospital and was originally from Ponte Serrada, also to the west. The hospital confirmed that the baby had died at 4 pm Sunday.
At the hospital, the material was collected for badysis at Lacen, who was responsible for diagnosing the disease. Epidemiological surveillance has also been informed of the case.
Meningitis affects the nervous system of the victim. According to the city of Xanxerê, with the result, it will also be possible to determine whether there has been a case of meningitis caused by a virus, a fungus or a bacterium.
The city's municipal health department also reported that, if the result was positive, a prophylactic procedure would be carried out with parents and those who had more contact with the baby.
