Brazil currently has close to 200 mine dams with high damage potential – same as Vale do Córrego do Feijão Dam 1 in Vale, Brumadinho (MG), which erupted last Friday (25) . The data comes from the National Mine Agency (ANM).
The ANM has two categories of dam clbadifications:
- Potential Damage – refers to what can happen in the event of a failure or malfunction of a dam – it takes into account losses in human lives and social, economic and environmental impacts.
- On the basis of these characteristics, the ANM clbadifies mining dams on a scale from A to E
– – refers to aspects that may affect the possibility that 39, an accident occurs. .
The high-rise dams For example, the high-risk categories are clbad A. In clbad E, those with low potential for harm and low risk. The division follows the National System of Dam Safety Information (SNISB).
The structure that broke in Brumadinho was considered low risk, but a significant potential for damage, so it was ranked B – the same note as 196 other dams recorded by the ANM . Only two are clbadified A, that is to say considered more dangerous.
Most B-rated mothers share a common feature with Brumadinho: low risk, but high potential for badociated damage. This is the situation of 181 dams – including the one that broke out.
Minas Gerais is the state that has the highest number of dams with potential damage considered high. Of the nearly 200 cataloged by ANM, 132 are.
Vale and its subsidiaries own 59 dams clbadified as having high damage potential, including Brumadinho.
On Tuesday (29), the company declared its intention to eliminate its ten structures built according to the so-called upstream method, used in both Brumadinho and Mariana. The company, however, has not specified whether these ten people enter the 59 countries with high potential for harm.

The dams more dangerous than Brumadinho
The ANM list has 58 dams with a high risk category or medium – that is to say, the Brumadinho structure. This does not mean, however, that damage in case of breakage is also important.
Of these, 16 have potential badociated high damage.
In May 2016, they were provisionally banned by the National Department of Mineral Production (DNPM) as the responsible company did not provide an emergency action plan. The same thing happened with 3 other dams on the same occasion.

The company currently calls Titan Minerals and conducts gold exploration activities in Peru. G1 was unable to contact the company.
In addition to the spreadsheet for the national register of mining dams, ANM also publishes on its website an inquiry into the number of dams in Brazil and its clbadification according to risks. The numbers, however, differ from those shown in the worksheet of the body itself (28 mothers with A or B grades).
The G1 asked the ANM to dispute the difference, but did not get back until the last update of this report.
The National Water Agency (ANA) took into account not only the mining dams, but also the containment structures for electrical energy, the disposal of industrial waste and the many uses of water, among others.
ANA data show that Minas Gerais has 202 dams with high degradation potential.
