Vale's president, Fabio Schvartsman, said on Thursday (31) that the Brumadinho Dam (MG) break was very fast, which "engulfed" the warning siren.
"It has happened a fact that is not very common: the dam was broken very quickly," he said at a press conference in Brasilia.
"The siren was engulfed by the fall of the dam before it could touch."
The tailings dam, which was in the Córrego do Feijão mine, broke out on Friday (25), causing a tragedy that left at least 99 dead and 259 missing.
The sea of mud swept the local community and part of the administrative center and cafeteria of the valley. The victims include local residents and employees of the mining company. Vegetation and rivers were affected.
Earlier this Thursday, Vale had sent a note to BBC Brazil stating: "Due to the speed with which the event occurred, it was not possible to 39, activate sirens related to dam 1 ".
The experts said that there was a technology to trigger emergency sound alerts in all circumstances, regardless of the speed of the event.
