BRASÍLIA – Senators
Simone Tebet
(MDB-MS),
Alvaro Dias
(We can-PR) and
Major Olímpio
(PSL-SP) have abandoned their applications for
President of the Senate,
to try to avoid the victory of
Renan Calheiros
(MDB-AL). The goal is to reduce the number of nominations opposed to Renan, his favorite, in order to focus the opposing votes on a name able to defeat him.

Simone Tebet declared officially elected to Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP), considered the main opponent of Renan. In the group of pre-candidates against Alagoan, Tebet and Alcolumbre were considered the strongest to face him.

The group met a few hours before the election and drew some scenarios in the conflict with Renan. They combined to "feel the climate" of the plenary before opening the strategy.

– I have no problem with declining my candidacy for Senator Davi Alcolumbre, just like Senator Alvaro Dias, just like Major Olympio, because we are united in our difference, he said. "The presidency has never been an end in itself, and for me the most important thing is to recover the credibility of this House in front of Brazilian society, which calls for renewal and alternation of powers.

With that, there are six candidates: besides Renan and David, Fernando Collor (PROS-AL), Jose Reguffe (No party-DF), Angelo Coronel (PSD-BA), Esperidião Amin.

– I do not want to be accused after being responsible for the election of Renan Calheiros – said Alvaro Dias. "I am not a candidate for the presidency of the Senate, I take my name again," he concluded.

He said he did not ask for ambition, but to be a spokesperson for "the idea of change". He also objected to what he called "the old policy", a practice that, according to the senator, would have been approved by the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that determined the vote by secret ballot of the President of the Senate.

– The fear of change is visible. He was present during the election campaign and is now being reiterated in the Senate. The winds of change had no open doors to enter the National Congress – said Dias.

Major Olímpio criticized the interference of government members in the election of the House and appealed to his colleagues to ensure that the tumultuous process of board selection leaves no trace progression of the "interests of the country".

– President Bolsonaro said very clearly: "I am the government, the executive, I will not participate in elections to the House and Senate". The president speaks for the government. And not who presented himself as representative of the government – said, referring to the approach of the advisers of the Minister of the Civil Household, Onyx Lorenzoni, to the senators in favor of Davi Alcolumbre, his corealist.

Espiridião Amin (PP-SC) spoke after the withdrawal of the candidatures and bounced the pressure, so that the conflict was also abandoned. He said his votes prevent Renan from reaching the 41 votes he needs to win in the first round. He said that he is keeping his candidacy to be an alternative for his colleagues.

"To say that I help Renan, or if I do not withdraw in front of David, I go against the desire of society, that is stupid, cowardly reductionism," has said Amin.

Alcolumbre preaches "independence"

Davi Alcolumbre, Renan Calheiros' main opponent, preached independence of powers and more transparency, as well as a new order and a new model of police. He refuted "still and always" by referring to Renan, who has been Speaker of the Senate four times.

– For the independence of powers and parliamentary autonomy, we no longer need the same thing – said Alcolumbre.

He criticized Toffoli's decision to proceed with a secret ballot:

– People are calling for a new model of politics We have to find our image for example, "said Alcolumbre.

Senator Fernando Collor (PROS-AL), the first candidate for the Senate presidency to speak, defended Saturday the prerogatives of the Congress, criticizing the "criminalization of politics" and the end of "l & # 39; "polarized" environment in the country.

– This (divisional) scenario is worrisome. We will not move with the country that feels the resentment. Divided, society will not find the way to economic prosperity and the elimination of various inequalities, "said Collor.

The former president defended that Congress "can not be in a hurry"

– We can not accept the criminalization of politics, nor be afraid to express our ideas. We must vigorously defend the prerogatives of the legislature in front of the other powers of the Republic, prerogatives affirmed and reaffirmed on several occasions by the Brazilian elector.

Then, Senator Reguffe (without FD party) defended his candidacy for the presidency of the Senate with the same platform as that used in his electoral campaigns: the reduction of expenses. He preached, among other things, the end of official cars, reducing the number of advisers and reducing the amount of compensation.

– We need a more transparent Senate that costs less to Brazilian taxpayers, Reguffe said.

He also defended a more independent performance towards the executive and more votes for the projects drafted by the senators themselves. He also preached the badysis of the requests for restraint of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) ministers.

– The role of the President of the Federal Senate is to badyze the demands of the Ministers of the Federal Supreme Court for their incapacity. If I am elected Speaker of the Senate, they will not be put aside, as long as they have consistency and substance, because nothing is worse in life than an injustice. But if it has substance and consistency, it will be given, "promised Reguffe.

The third speaker, Ângelo Coronel (PSD-BA) defended the changes made to the House rules of procedure. Among their proposals is the "democratization" of project reports. The colonel says that he will not let the proposals stay in the hands of the same senators. The honorable senator spent much of his speech quoting all his colleagues.
