The marble tomb placed on the grave of the German philosopher Karl Marx (1818-1883) was damaged during an attack last weekend, said Tuesday the body managing the Highgate Cemetery (5) north of London.
The author of the attack attempted to erase Marx's name from the plaque, which was recorded for the first time in 1881, after the death of the wife of the author of "The Capital", Jenny von Westphalen (1814-1881).
"We think it was a deliberate attack on Karl Marx.This is not by accident," said Ian Dungavell, executive director of the Friends of the Highgate Cemetery, during a meeting with press conference. The marble plaque, transferred in 1956 with the remains of the philosopher and his wife to the current cemetery "It will never be the same again," said Dungavell.

"On the human level, I am disappointed that someone is destroying a grave.Doing something as irrational is particularly regrettable," said the director of the foundation.
"It's a particularly ancient way of manifesting," Dungavell added.
The Marx Memorial belongs to the Tomb Foundation of Marx, who will decide whether or not to restore the damaged tombstone.
