Environmental imbalance can trigger an outbreak of infectious diseases in Brumadinho – Health

The immediate consequences of the Brumadinho disaster on the local ecosystem may trigger new epidemics of infectious diseases such as dengue fever, yellow fever and schistosomiasis. The alert was launched by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) as part of a study carried out after the rupture of the Vale do Feijão dam on 25 January.

The possibility of new outbreaks, according to Fiocruz, is linked to pre-existing conditions in the municipality. Brumadinho had already recorded three diseases cited in the survey and the badumption is that now the number of cases could increase.

The main hypothesis is that, by interrupting or reducing the reserves, the population could store water inappropriately and thus create an environment conducive to the proliferation of vector mosquitoes in case of dengue fever and yellow fever.

In the case of schistosomiasis – which is transmitted by molluscs – the imbalance of the ecosystem, caused by the arrival of mud in the Paraopeba River basin, may promote the proliferation of these vectors, increasing the risk of contamination of the population

According to Mariano Andrade da Silva, a member of the Center for Studies and Research on Emergencies and Disasters in Health (Cepedes) of Fiocruz, also reports another alert : the Mariana disaster that occurred in 2015 following the rupture of the Fundão dam.

"In this case, the population of Barra Longa had not recorded dengue cases before 2015 and then had 3,000 cases," says the researcher.

Chronic Diseases

The study also highlights the difficulty of accessing health services, which can worsen existing chronic illnesses in addition to causing mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Reasons include stress levels and post-traumatic stress disorder.
