Breakfast is considered by many to be the most important meal of the day and essential for maintaining health and weight. However, new research suggests that eating early does not help you lose weight. In fact, the evidence shows the opposite.
People who eat on average consume 260 calories and weigh 1 kg more than those who skip meals, according to previous studies.
But experts say that a healthy breakfast can be a good source of calcium and fiber. There was also an improvement in concentration and attention, especially in children.
Breakfast increases caloric intake and appetite in the afternoon
It is common that breakfast gives energy, prevents a person to prepare many snacks throughout the day and provides essential nutrients to the body.
This reputation stems from observational studies showing a positive relationship between breakfast and maintaining a healthy weight.
But a new Australian study in the medical journal BMJ examined the results of 13 studies on the effect of breakfast on weight and energy consumption and found little evidence to support it of these convictions.
Findings from a team of researchers from the Melbourne Monash University suggest that skipping breakfast might actually be a good way to reduce total daily caloric intake.
They came to the conclusion that people who eat breakfast usually consume more calories and have more appetite in the afternoons.
And they say that the recommendation of breakfast for weight loss in adults is necessary because it could have the opposite effect. However, scientists pointed out that their study had limitations.
Study participants were only followed for short periods – from 2 to 16 weeks – and the difference in calorie intake between those who ate lunch and those who skipped the meal was low .
The researchers concluded that it was necessary to continue research to predict the long-term effect of jumping or breakfast.
P The first meal of the day is a source of calcium and of Fibers
Professor Kevin Whelan, a specialist in Dietetics and Head of the Department of Mourning Sciences at King's College London, UK, we should not be too focused on the subject. calorie intake early in the morning.
"This study does not say that breakfast is bad for your health, breakfast is important for the ingestion of nutrients, calcium and fiber," he says.
But BMJ research has not badyzed this particular aspect of breakfast with a balanced diet.
"It's not said that breakfast is the cause of obesity," he says.
